Do you know that the government plans to ban the sale of pre-packed house coal in England?

The plan involves:

- Sales of all bagged traditional house coal will be phased out by February 2021, and the sale of loose coal direct to customers via approved coal merchants by February 2023. This covers all pre-packed house coal in polybags sold through retailers such as coal merchants, supermarkets, DIY stores and garage forecourts.

- From February 2021 certain manufactured fuels (known as briquettes or ovoids) will no longer be available. After that date only authorised manufactured smokeless fuels will be allowed for sale.

Will your customers have to pay more for wood fuels than for coal?

According to the Office for National Statistics the average price for 50kg bag of house coal in January 2020 was £19.89 and its net calorific value in 2018 was 25,100kJ/kg (7kWh/kg). This means an average coal energy price of 5.7 Pence / kWh. Our prices are competitive to allow you to charge similar prices.

What is the estimated market for wood fuels to replace house coal? 

According to Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2019, UK coal consumption by final consumers was 2.2 million tonnes in 2019. The domestic sector accounted for 24% of this, or 528,000 tonnes. This is the new potential market for wood fuels.

How Large is the Wood Fuel Market Now?

The existing market for wood fuel is vast: according to the Domestic Wood Survey 2015 by the UK government, 2 million UK households (7.5% of total) used wood fuel. 

Can coal firing appliances burn wood fuels as well?

If your customers use coal firing appliances then in most cases it is perfectly acceptable to burn wood, however, they need to check manufacturer instructions. All multi-fuel and solid fuel stoves, boiler stoves, range cookers, open fires, and similar appliances can use wood fuels. You can also attract new customers who already use wood burners.
